5 Gentle Chair Exercises Seniors Can Do at Home

Staying active is one of the best things older adults can do for their health—and you do not need a gym to do it. These five gentle chair exercises improve circulation, flexibility, and strength, all from the comfort and safety of a seated position.
Always check with a doctor before starting a new routine, and stop if anything causes pain.
1. Seated Marches
Sitting tall, lift one knee, then the other, as if marching. This warms up the legs and gets the blood flowing. Aim for 20 gentle lifts.
2. Ankle Circles
Lift one foot slightly and rotate the ankle in slow circles, then switch directions and feet. Great for circulation and stiff joints.
3. Arm Raises
Reach both arms overhead (or as high as comfortable), hold briefly, and lower. Repeat 10 times to build shoulder strength and posture.
4. Seated Twists
With feet flat, gently turn your upper body to one side, hold, then the other. This keeps the spine mobile and eases tension.
5. Heel and Toe Taps
Tap your heels, then your toes, in a steady rhythm. A simple way to strengthen the lower legs and improve coordination.
